HUGE ADDITION: Colts Officially Promote utility Veteran Receiver to Active Roster

As the playoffs approach, the Indianapolis Colts continue to shuffle the deck, this time adding a veteran pass-catcher to the 53-man roster.

Over the last month, the Indianapolis Colts have been promoting veteran receiver D.J. Montgomery from the practice squad to the active roster. This time, it’s not just a gameday designation, but an official spot in the lineup.

Indianapolis Colts waive WR D.J. Montgomery

The Colts announced on X, “We have signed WR D.J. Montgomery from the practice squad to the 53-man roster and waived G Arlington Hambright.”

They would make room for Montgomery by waiving guard Arlington Hambright, who had spent most of the preseason on the field.

The Colts no longer have to make weekly decisions on Montgomery’s status because teams can only elevate practice squad players to the roster for gamedays three times per season.

This move could also be attributed to the Colts’ bruising 34-14 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals, which ended a four-game winning streak. Gardner Minshew threw for 240 yards in this game but couldn’t find many completions outside of wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr. (8) and rookie tight end Will Mallory (5).

While Montgomery’s limited career exposure (3 catches for 36 yards) makes him unlikely to see the field in such important games, he could be a suitable option as a deeper depth piece with the wide receiver room. He’s also capable of pushing the defense during practice, making them more prepared for an unexpected playoff appearance.

We’ll see what happens when the Indianapolis Colts play the Pittsburgh Steelers on Saturday at 4:30 p.m.
