OFFICIAL: 49ers’ Have Officially Announced The Re-Signing of Top and Former Fans Favourite – ‘My heart was always wanting to be here’

On Wednesday afternoon, a familiar face returned to the SAP Performance Facility as the San Francisco 49ers began Week 15 practice. Jason Verrett, a veteran cornerback who was officially signed to the 49ers practice squad on Monday, was wearing jersey No. 22 and working out with the rest of the team’s defensive backs.

Verrett was signed as a free agent in 2019 and has appeared in 15 games over the last four seasons. In a red and gold uniform, he had 65 tackles, seven passes defensed, and two interceptions.

“I’m just excited to be back,” said Verrett before his first workout. “I missed everyone. I’m just itching to get them started on this run.

“I’m just trying to be myself and adjust to whatever they’re doing right now.” I’m not trying to do anything outlandish; I’m just trying to be myself as much as possible.”

Verrett has dealt with two season-ending injuries, tearing his ACL at the start of the 2021 season and then tearing his Achilles tendon in the fall of 2022. He spent a brief time on the Houston Texans practice squad from mid-October to mid-November, marking his return to the NFL after a lengthy physical recovery process.

“(That month in Houston) was a way I could get reps,” Verrett explained. “My heart always desired to be here.” Now, I’m just relieved that everything worked out.”

As the season enters Week 15, depth in the secondary is critical as San Francisco continues its playoff push despite a slew of defensive back injuries. All-Pro safety Talanoa Hufanga tore his ACL in Week 11, and cornerback Charvarius Ward is out with a groin injury suffered on the first series of the 49ers’ Week 14 game against the Seattle Seahawks. Since then, San Francisco has added two-time Super Bowl champion Logan Ryan to the 53-man roster and added cornerback Kemon Hall and safety Erik Harris to the practice squad.

Overall, Verrett has been impressed by what he has seen from the 49ers defensive backs.

“Deommodore Lenoir and Mooney Ward, and some of the other guys are all playing great,” he said. “Mooney, he really took his game to the next level, as did De-Mo, seeing him as a rookie back in 2021.” I can see their progress in the way they’ve played. “I’m looking forward to seeing what the young guys can do.”
