St. Louis CITY SC has acquired defensive midfielder Chris Durkin from the United States Youth National team and D.C. United in exchange for CITY SC midfielder Jared Stroud, defender Lucas Bartlett, and $300,000 in 2024 General Allocation Money. Durkin will be on the U-22 initiative roster.
“Chris is a young talented defensive midfielder who has gained a lot of great experience here in the United States, over in Europe, and with the youth national team,” Sporting Director Lutz Pfannenstiel said. “He has a hard working, ambitious and fighter mentality that makes him a good fit for this club.”

Durkin, who will be 24 in February 2024, has amassed a wealth of experience across multiple levels of the soccer landscape. The Hampton, Virginia, native signed a Homegrown contract with D.C. at the age of 16 and made his MLS debut in March of 2018. He spent a season and a half with D.C. before heading to Europe to play for Sint-Truidense V.V. in the Belgian First Division.
Durkin joined Sint-Truidense V.V. on loan on August 30, 2019, before joining permanently on May 7, 2020. Durkin appeared in 70 games for the Belgian club in three seasons, scoring two goals and assisting five times. The midfielder made his Belgian debut on September 25, 2019, in a 2-0 win over OH Leuven in the Sixth Round of the Beker van Belgie, a Belgian domestic cup. On February 8, 2020, the 23-year-old scored his first goal for Sint-Truidense in a 5-2 league win over KAS Eupen. On March 4, 2022, he played in a 1-1 draw against KV Mechelen in league play.
Durkin has returned to D.C. United as a full-time starter since leaving Belgium, appearing in 66 games with four goals and six assists across all competitions. He led the team in duels and interceptions over the last two seasons with 463 and 42, respectively.
Durkin has represented his country at multiple levels of the United States Youth National team, ranging from the Under-15 to the Under-23 teams. He has 61 caps for the youth national team and has five goals.
