Outfielder Victor Reyes is heading to South Korea after spending parts of five seasons with the Detroit Tigers organization. He’ll join the Lotte Giants in the KBO.
According to Jeeho Yo on social media, three clubs announced foreign player signings and re-signings today in the KBO, leaving a lot to unpack.
SSG Landers re-signs LHP Roenis Elias ($1 million) and OF Guillermo Heredia ($1.5 million).
The Lotte Giants have re-signed LHP Charlie Barnes ($1.35 million) and acquired OF Victor Reyes ($950K).
Finally, Kiwoom Heroes has signed LHP Enmanuel De Jesus for $800,000. Teams in the KBO can sign up to three foreign players, with no more than two pitchers.
Teams have always carried two pitchers and one position player, with very few exceptions. All first-year foreign players are paid a maximum of $1 million.
The 29-year-old made his major league debut in 2018 and played in the majors every year until 2023, when he spent the entire season in the minors.
In 2018, he set a career high with 100 games played, and he will play 92 games in 2022. He has a career.264 batting average with a.294 on-base percentage. In the big leagues, he’s hit 16 home runs and stolen 33 bases. In limited action in 2019, he hit 304.
Given his age and prior success, he could find himself back in the United States in 2025 if he performs well in 2024.
Pitchers Chris Flexen and Erik Fedde have recently returned from the KBO to play in the majors. Reyes might be able to do it from the position player side.
