When Bryce Harper FaceTimes you, you answer the phone.
It’s all part of Harper’s recruiting strategy to bring Japanese pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto to the Philadelphia Phillies.
On Monday, MLB Network’s Jon Morosi reported that part of Yamamoto’s presentation to the Phillies included a phone call from the seven-time All-Star.
It’s part of a lengthy process for Yoshi, who is expected to sign the largest free-agent pitcher contract this offseason. He could easily sign a $300 million contract. And the Phillies, who don’t really require starting pitching, are still interested in the star.
The New York Yankees, New York Mets, and San Francisco Giants are among the teams that have reportedly met with Yoshi.
Harper has also been involved in the recruitment process before.
Harper had been eyeing free agency for years before shortstop Trea Turner agreed to an 11-year, $300 million contract with the Phillies. He would make fun of his former Washington Nationals teammate’s ability to look good in a Phillies uniform. Harper eventually admitted that he didn’t need to persuade anyone. It was done for him by the city of Philadelphia.
Perhaps Yoshi will be in the same boat.
