LOUISVILLE, KY: The Louisville football team has now recruited a player from their bitter opponent, adding to their current recruiting frenzy through the transfer site.
Tight end Izayah Cummings, who attended Kentucky for his first four years of college, said on Sunday that he has committed to play for the Cardinals in his last season of eligibility.
After Eastern Illinois safety Blake Ruffin, he is Louisville’s second transfer commitment of the day. The Cardinals have secured nine total portal commits since Friday, landing multiple commits in each of the previous four days.
Up until now, the 232-pound, 6-foot-3 tight end’s collegiate career has been rather up and down. Despite starting two of the 12 games this season, he only caught four passes for a total of 98 yards. All of his output, though, came in the season’s last two games, including a 55-yard reception against Louisville in the Governor’s Cup.
The Male alum, who was born in Louisville, chose to attend the University of Kentucky instead of the Cardinals after graduating from high school as a wide receiver. Cummings did not record any stats in his freshman year. In his sophomore year, he moved to tight end and caught 14 passes for 195 yards and three touchdowns. Despite his lack of experience, Cummings’ devotion is greatly needed by Louisville, since they struggled to produce much output from their tight end group until the end of the season. Tanner Koziol of Ball State and Mark Redman of San Diego State have been added to the tight end room as part of an overhaul by head coach Jeff Brohm and his staff. Jamari Johnson, Duane Martin, and Nate Kurisky are also returning to Louisville.
After Redman and Koziol, Cummings is the third tight end to transfer to Louisville in this cycle. Since the winter transfer window opened on December 4, the Cardinals have also seen the entry of nine scholarship layers through the portal.
On December 20, the first day of the early signing period, he is anticipated to sign. Under first-year head coach Jeff Brohm, Louisville finished 10-2 in the regular season and earned a spot in the ACC Championship Game. Now, the team is getting ready for their December 27 Holiday Bowl game against USC.
