BREAKING: Notre Dame Fighting Irish officially lost a former top 4-Star and offensive Prospect to Cal Golden Bears – REPORT

On Wednesday, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish officially lost a former top recruit and offensive weapon. Tobias Merriweather, a wide receiver, is expected to transfer to the California Golden Bears, according to Matt Zenitz of 247Sports.

Merriweather, a former high-end recruit, entered the transfer portal in early December. He was not, however, the first Fighting Irish player to declare his intention to transfer, as defensive end NaNa Osafo-Mensah, fellow wideout Chris Tyree, and offensive lineman Zeke Correll all did before him.

5 Tobias Merriweather transfer destinations that could unlock his potential

Tobias Merriweather:

Notre Dame Football Internship
Merriweather, the 14th-best receiver prospect in the class of 2022, spent the previous two seasons with the Notre Dame football team. As a true freshman, he saw limited action, catching just one pass. He did, however, make the most of his opportunities, hauling in one pass for 41 yards and a touchdown against the Stanford Cardinal.
With the departures of fellow wideouts Lorenzo Styles Jr. and Braden Lenzy, among others, the long six-foot-four receiver stepped into a more significant role in 2023. Merriweather appeared in 12 games this year, catching 14 passes for 284 yards and two touchdowns. The Washington native led the team in receiving yards per reception with 20.3 yards per reception. His best game of the season came in mid-September against Central Michigan, when he had three receptions for 91 yards and a touchdown.

Notre Dame Fighting Irish: Massive Exodus at Wide Receiver
Chansi Stuckey was fired by the Fighting Irish in late November, ending his two-year tenure as wide receivers coach. A slew of Fighting Irish wideouts entered the portal as a result of the fallout. Along with Tobias Merriweather, pass catchers Rico Flores Jr., Braylon James, and Chris Tyree have entered the transfer portal. Flores Jr. will attend UCLA after recording 27 receptions as a freshman last season, while James will attend TCU. Meanwhile, Tyree leaves an illustrious Notre Dame career behind him, with 2,106 scrimmage yards and 15 touchdowns over four seasons. He’ll join the Virginia Cavaliers next season.
