DETROIT — The Detroit Tigers, who have made significant investments to improve next season, have reached an agreement with right-hander Jack Flaherty, 28, to a $14 million, one-year contract. Flaherty will also be eligible to receive a $1 million performance bonus.

Detroit, which had its eighth consecutive losing season and ended second in the AL Central with 78-84, just inked manager A.J. Hinch to what the franchise described as a long-term contract extension.
The Tigers activated Mark Canha’s $11.5 million option early in the active offseason, following the 34-year-old outfielder’s trade with the Milwaukee Brewers for minor league pitcher Blake Holub.
Additionally, the Tigers signed left-hander Andrew Chafin to a $4.75 million, one-year contract and 35-year-old Japanese right-hander Kenta Maeda to a $24 million, two-year contract.
After speaking with the squad’s leadership, Flaherty stated that the team is prepared to win.
He said, “You could feel it.” “It is visible to you.”
With a salary of $5.4 million in the previous season, Flaherty has had an ERA of more than 4.00 in three of the previous four campaigns.
For starts 26, 28, and 30, he would receive $250,000 per and $500,000 overall.
Including 1-3 with a 6.75 ERA in seven starts and two relief appearances with the Orioles, Flaherty went 8-9 with a 4.99 ERA in 27 starts and two relief appearances. On August 1st, Baltimore acquired him in exchange for right-hander Zack Showalter, left-hander Drew Rom, and infielder César Prieto.
In his seven major league seasons, he is 42-35 with a 3.75 ERA. In 2018, he finished fifth in the NL Rookie of the Year voting. The next season, he went 11-8 for the Cardinals with a 2.75 ERA, good enough for fourth place in the Cy Young Award competition.
With a ton of baseball ahead of him, Flaherty, who made his major league debut in 2017, declared.
