The Falcons’ trade of Justin Fields has been a hot topic of conversation among supporters. It’s unclear if Arthur Smith, should he continue as coach beyond this season, and Terry Fontenot would be interested. In 2021, they had the opportunity to choose him, but they decided to pass in favor of Kyle Pitts. Furthermore, there’s no assurance that the Bears will make Fields available. However, the majority predict that Chicago will trade Fields and choose a quarterback with the first overall choice.
There’s no denying that the Falcons will be looking for a quarterback, and there are many worthy candidates. There are a ton of talented players in the 2018 draft class, including Drake, Maye, Jayden Daniels, Bo Nix, and Caleb Williams. However, with their jobs potentially on the line, are Arthur Smith and Terry Fontenot willing to trust a rookie?
Even though it isn’t in the organization’s best interest, they will most certainly take that into consideration in summer, which might lead them to choose a veteran like Fields.
Albert Breer, an NFL insider, discussed the possible marriage on the Rich Eisen Show recently. Like many, he understands why some think it would work, but he also views it as one more risky move by Falcons leadership, akin to going with a rookie.
Breer stated, “It seems reasonable, and I believe he would be a good schematic fit for Arthur Smith.” “I would just ask, do you go all in on Justin given the way he has played? The exchange was visible to me, and that makes some sense. Would you be willing to depend on Justin Fields for your job security? Alternatively, and I believe this is a solid suggestion, would you agree that we should trade for Justin Fields and select a player in the first round?
Breer raises what, in my opinion, will be the main obstacle to the Falcons acquiring Justin Fields. Although there is no denying his potential, they are thinking about cutting him loose since, during the first three years of his career in Chicago, he has been far too erratic. Relying exclusively on Arthur Smith and Terry Fontenot in 2024, when their jobs are on the line, would be a huge risk if they survive this season.
However, Fields becomes a far more realistic alternative if Smith is released after this season. With some wiggle room if it doesn’t work out, the new coach can be more high on Fields than Smith was when he entered the draft. This allows him to take a chance on Fields’ potential.
