St. Louis CITY SC has signed Norwegian-American right back Tomas Totland for an undisclosed fee from Swedish First Division club BK Häcken. Totland has agreed to a three-year contract with a club option for 2027.
“We are excited to bring Tomas to St. Louis after receiving a lot of interest from European and MLS teams,” Sporting Director Lutz Pfannenstiel said. “He brings high-level experience to our team, having played in both the Champions League and the Europa League this season.” In addition to his experience, he is well-rounded in both the offensive and defensive phases.”
Totland, a dual Norwegian-American national, has spent the last two seasons with BK Häcken. The 24-year-old right back most recently appeared in the Europa League, Europa League qualifiers, and Champions League qualifiers, making 10 appearances and contributing one assist. He was instrumental in Häcken’s first Allsvenskan title, Swedish First Division, and third Svenska Cup, Swedish knockout cup. Totland has appeared in 60 matches for Häcken in all competitions over the last two years, scoring once and assisting seven times.
Totland was a member of the Norwegian Youth National team’s Under-18, U-20, and U-21 squads. He made seven appearances in total, including one at the 2019 U-20 World Cup.
Totland spent his first five professional seasons in Norway with three different clubs, quickly rising through the ranks. He began his career in 2016 with Fana Idrettslag, a Norwegian Third Division team, where he played 10 matches and scored one goal before transferring to Sogndal Idrettslag, a Norwegian Second Division team. Totland played 81 games for Sogndal, scoring seven goals and assisting on nine occasions. In 2021, he played one season for Troms Idrettslag, a Norwegian First Division club, tallying five goals and three assists in 28 matches across all competitions.
