According to two people with direct knowledge of the situation, Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman is luring Mike Denbrock back to the program as offensive coordinator, luring him away from LSU and former Fighting Irish coach Brian Kelly.
The people spoke on the condition of anonymity because the deal’s details, as well as final approval from the school, were still being worked out.
Denbrock, 59, will take over for Gerad Parker, who was named head coach of Troy earlier this week after serving as offensive coordinator at Notre Dame for one season. Denbrock will be Notre Dame’s third offensive coordinator since Freeman took over as head coach after Kelly left for LSU at the end of the 2021 season.
Tommy Rees was Notre Dame’s offensive coordinator in 2022, but he left to become Alabama’s offensive coordinator after the season, and Freeman promoted Parker from tight ends coach.
Denbrock worked for Kelly at Notre Dame from 2010 to 2016, most recently as offensive coordinator. He then went to Cincinnati, where he worked with Freeman under head coach Luke Fickell.
Denbrock will join Kelly at LSU in 2022. He oversaw the No. 1 offense in the country last season, with Heisman Trophy winner Jayden Daniels at quarterback.
