The Detroit Tigers have been one of the most surprising teams this offseason, appearing to be serious about winning the NL Central. The Tigers aren’t done yet, as they’ve added another pitcher to their roster.
According to Kiley McDaniel of ESPN, Detroit has signed Shelby Miller to a one-year contract with an option. Miller will earn $3.5 million in 2024, with an option for $4.25 million in 2025. His contract includes a slew of perks.
Miller pitched in relief for the Los Angeles Dodgers during the 2023 season. Miller had an impressive 1.71 ERA and a 42/19 K/BB ratio in 36 appearances. Miller’s ERA was under two for the first time since his rookie season in 2012.
The Tigers have signed both Jack Flaherty and Kenta Maeda in the pitching market. Detroit is looking for a spark in the bullpen and has signed Shelby Miller.
The Tigers’ bullpen ranked 17th in the league last season, with a 4.16 ERA. The addition of Miller to the mix provides Detroit with a veteran option in the late innings. Miller’s time with the Dodgers last season demonstrated that he still has some gas in the tank.
Throughout free agency, Detroit may not receive the same attention as a team like the Dodgers. They have, however, made more than one addition as they prepare for a playoff run. Shelby Miller isn’t Shohei Ohtani, but he’s still a valuable reliever. With him in the mix, along with their other mound additions, Detroit is hoping to make it to the postseason.
