As the Atlanta Falcons try to salvage their season, Arthur Smith will make another quarterback change.
According to a source familiar with the situation, the Falcons will start Taylor Heinicke against the Colts on Sunday, pushing second-year quarterback Deasmond Ridder back to the bench.
The Athletic broke the news first.
Ridder has been benched twice this season, with Heinicke replacing him as the starter in Weeks 9 and 10 – both losses. After replacing an injured Heinicke late in a Nov. 12 defeat to the Cardinals, the second-year signal-caller regained his starting role and nearly led the comeback.
Unfortunately, Ridder’s troubles from earlier in the season persisted. Ridder was erratic during Sunday’s 9-7 loss to the two-win Carolina Panthers, throwing a terrible red zone interception that resulted to a loss that ended the Flacons’ playoff hopes.
