According to Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press:

Shelby Miller, a right-handed reliever, has signed a one-year contract with an option with the #Tigers, according to a source. Today is Miller’s physical in Detroit. The agreement should be finalized soon. @kileymcd was the first to agree.

This past season, the 33-year-old helped the Dodgers win the National League West again, going 3-0 with a 1.71 ERA in 36 games.

Miller was a former top National League starter who won 15 games for the St. Louis Cardinals in 2013. He won 10 games in 2014 before struggling with poor performance and injury. After St. Louis, he went 6-17 in Atlanta. In 2016, he went 3-12 for Arizona. He appeared in four games in 2017, five games in 2018, and 19 games in 2019. He opted out of the COVID 2020 season and then appeared in just 17 games between 2021 and 2022.

He’s 41-58 with a 4.08 ERA in his career.

His signing adds to the Tigers’ offseason acquisitions as they look to regain ground in the American League Central. After acquiring Mark Canha in a trade, the team signed starting pitchers Kenta Maeda and Jack Flaherty. They also re-signed reliever Andrew Chafin.

Detroit finished second in the division in 2023 and clearly sees the division as attainable given the Royals’ and White Sox’s rebuilding efforts, as well as the Guardians’ and Twins’ spending constraints.
