Welcome to SB Nation Reacts, a survey of NCAA fans from across the country. Throughout the year, we pose questions to the most devoted Michigan Wolverines fans and fans from all over the country. Sign up here to receive weekly emailed surveys.
The Michigan Wolverines are the nation’s top team, but if they want to keep that title in 2024, they’ll need to replace key contributors who are leaving for the NFL. Roman Wilson and Cornelius Johnson, Michigan’s top two wideouts, will both enter the NFL Draft in 2024.
This week’s SB Nation Reacts asked Michigan fans what positions the team should target in the transfer portal.
48 percent of fans want Michigan to target a receiver, 29 percent want them to target a cornerback, and 16 percent want them to target a quarterback.
Michigan is interested in transfer receivers such as Indiana’s Donovan McCulley and Wake Forest’s Jahmal Banks. Michigan offered McCulley a scholarship, and Banks will visit Michigan in January. This season, McCulley, who stands 6-foot-5, had 48 receptions for 644 yards and six touchdowns. Banks had 59 catches for 653 yards and four touchdowns.
247Sports considers Michigan and Alabama schools “worth keeping an eye on” for cornerbacks, citing former USC CB Domani Jackson. According to JPGCFB, the Wolverines have also contacted former UConn CB Mumu Bin-Wahad.
Michigan contacted former UCLA quarterback Dante Moore, but Moore has since committed to Oregon. Whether Michigan starting quarterback J.J. McCarthy returns for his senior season or enters the NFL Draft, the Wolverines will almost certainly add a portal quarterback, as has become the norm under Jim Harbaugh.
Michigan fans were also polled to determine whether they believe high school recruiting or the transfer portal is more important to the Wolverines.
The majority of fans, 67 percent, believe that high school recruiting and using the portal are equally important, while 24 percent believe that high school recruiting is the only way to go. Only 9% believe the transfer portal is more important.
