The Chicago Bears have the most draft capital in the 2024 NFL Draft, putting general manager Ryan Poles in position to assemble one of the strongest lineups in football in the long run if he makes the right decisions. While there are still several months of evaluations to go, one guy appears to be a lock to join the Bears next season.
Chicago will enter the 2024 NFL Draft with two top-10 picks, most possibly including the first overall pick. Poles would appear to have a plenty of alternatives for a franchise with a premier edge rusher (Montez Sweat) and a franchise-caliber quarterback (Justin Fields).
The current discussion among fans and analysts is whether the Bears should choose a quarterback at No. 1 overall and trade Fields, or move down, gain more draft capital, and build a stronger roster around Fields. According to one NFL insider, there isn’t a single option that will need to be contested in Chicago’s front office.
According to Adam Caplan of Pro Football Network, the Bears “won’t pass” on USC Trojans quarterback Caleb Williams with the first overall choice.
While he acknowledges that the Bears must still go through the pre-draft procedure to select Williams, it appears like Chicago will do so.
Some consider Williams to be the obvious No. 1 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, but North Carolina quarterback Drake Maye is just as talented. There are also NFL teams that have off-field concerns about Williams and believe his play this season has created some on-field concerns.
Caplan appears to feel that the Bears are locked in on Williams in the same way that the Cincinnati Bengals were a few years ago, as long as Williams does not trash the pre-draft process. If this is the case, Justin Fields trade speculations will heat up after Week 18.
