The Cardinals may be the best bet in baseball to get one of the game’s best closers.
The St. Louis Cardinals have stated that they intend to address their bullpen prior to spring training.
Pitchers and catchers are scheduled to report to spring training in less than two months, and the Cardinals’ bullpen has yet to improve. St. Louis began the offseason by adding three starting pitchers, and the rotation has since improved.
The club’s next objective is to repair the bullpen. St. Louis had one of the worst bullpens in baseball last season, so a huge move could make sense. One of the best relievers in baseball is still available in free agency, so the Cardinals might take a big swing.
All-Star on five occasions Josh Hader, a free agent, has been one of the top closers in baseball over the last seven years. He’s set to sign a large contract this summer, maybe worth more than $100 million, but he could be an ideal fit for St. Louis.
The Cardinals were linked to superstar pitchers such as Blake Snell, Jordan Montgomery, and Yoshinobu Yamamoto throughout the offseason. All three are anticipated to get lucrative free-agent contracts, but the Cardinals aren’t the ones handing them out. The city of St. Louis still has money to spend. Why not use it on one of baseball’s top closers?
Last year, St. Louis struggled at the end of games, finishing with the 10th-most blown saves (28). Hader could quickly assist in resolving the problem. Last season, he had 33 saves and a 1.28 ERA in 61 appearances.
He may be expensive, but if the Cardinals want to win in 2024, they should go all-in on Hader.
