The Browns’ quarterback depth chart is comfortably topped by Joe Flacco, but a new backup will be in place for the foreseeable future. Dorian Thompson-Robinson was placed on injured reserve by the team on Tuesday.
The fifth-round rookie is battling with a hip injury that will keep him out for a prolonged period of time. Thompson-Robinson will be out for at least four weeks as a result of the move, which means he will be out for the rest of the regular season. P.J. Walker has been promoted from the practice squad to the active roster in a similar move.
Cleveland’s quarterback position has been in turmoil, with the team winning games with four different quarterbacks. Thompson-Robinson has made three starts and eight outings in place of starter Deshaun Watson, who was in and out of the lineup until sustaining season-ending shoulder surgery. The UCLA alum had served as Flacco’s backup during his outstanding tenure as head coach, but Walker will now be the QB2.
In his debut season with the Browns, the latter has made two starts. Walker has appeared in six games, the most recent of which was in Week 12. On the field, the former XFLer has struggled, throwing five interceptions and only one touchdown. Those numbers cost him an active roster place to create room for the Flacco-Thompson-Robinson combination, but he is currently in line to finish the season as the team’s backup.
Flacco has been outstanding since joining the Browns last month. As a result, he could be playing his way into a new contract with Cleveland this offseason. The former Super Bowl MVP will be relied on for the rest of the season and into the playoffs, but the latest injury-related alteration to the quarterback depth chart will leave the Browns scant at the position moving forward.
Head coach Kevin Stefanski confirmed to the media on Tuesday that kicker Dustin Hopkins will miss Cleveland’s Thursday night game against the Jets. Hopkins left the Browns’ Week 16 victory with a hamstring issue, and the team responded by signing Riley Patterson yesterday. The Browns, who are still in contention for the AFC’s top spot, will have a new kicker while bringing back a familiar figure to fill the QB2 role.
