The Detroit Tigers have appointed Dylan Axelrod, a former Major League pitcher, as their new Pitching Performance and Integration Coordinator in an effort to contend in the AL Central next season.
The Detroit Tigers have promoted a former Major League pitcher to a crucial position on the Major League staff as they aim to continue making waves in the American League Central in 2024.
Dylan Axelrod, a former pitcher, has been appointed by the Detroit Tigers to the position of Pitching Performance and Integration Coordinator.
This does not imply that Axelrod is the team’s pitching coach, but he will be heavily involved in the development of pitchers as well as the creation of strategies to outwit opponents. Axelrod was previously employed with the Angels of Los Angeles.
Axelrod, 38, played in the major leagues for five years, primarily with the Cincinnati Reds and Chicago White Sox. He threw until 2015, having made his major league debut in 2011. He was a 9–15 pitcher with a 5.27 ERA in his career. Even though it wasn’t a terrific year, the 2013 season produced his greatest body of work. That year, he started 20 games for Chicago, finishing 4-11.
He’ll get to work with a staff that includes a number of exciting young guns with the Tigers. The core of the next great Tigers team was intended to consist of Casey Mize, Tarik Skubal, and Matt Manning, but sadly, the three have had trouble staying healthy.
According to sources, Mize will be healthy for Opening Day after recovering from Tommy John surgery.
The team added free agents Jack Flaherty and Kenta Maeda this offseason in addition to the youthful arms.
In 2023, Detroit placed second in the American League Central.
