MONTREAL CANADIENS: Canadiens Consider star Defensive Trade Amid Defensive Reshuffle

According to Sportsnet’s Eric Engels, defenceman David Savard, 33, is a stabilizing factor for the Montreal Canadiens, but he could be a trade possibility this season. As a Stanley Cup winner, a devoted shot-blocker, and a penalty-killing stalwart, Savard has a plethora of expertise. However, it is those same qualities that could make him a sought-after trade target ahead of the season’s trade deadline.

Despite Savard’s evident worth to the Canadiens, the upcoming trade market may present an opportunity too good to pass up. Engels goes on to say, “The Canadiens are then going to have to seriously consider moving David Savard in short order.” With no protection provisions in his contract, Savard also becomes an appealing option for teams looking for more than a short-term rental. His final one-year contract, with an annual salary of $3.5 million, provides up opportunities for teams prepared to make a large commitment.

The Canadiens must weigh Savard’s contributions against the possible rewards from a deal. And, given the team isn’t necessarily concerned with replacing Savard right away, it could be wiser to receive a good return while they can.

The Canadiens are still a developing team that requires more picks than Savard.

Engels emphasizes that the organization is patient in developing young players like as Jordan Harris, Aber Xhekaj, Jayden Struble, and Justin Barron. The strategy is not to rush those possibilities, understanding that they will become key assets for the team’s future core. Because the Habs are being cautious, the Canadiens can take their time with a Savard deal this season.

The sole deadline is the approaching trade deadline. It may increase the urgency of the decision-making process, making Savard’s impending departure a watershed moment in the Canadiens’ strategic repositioning. Montreal will receive numerous requests about the player. It’s possible that the team that steps forward first will be the one to land the defenseman in a trade.
