After defeating the Jets 37-20 to secure a postseason berth, the Browns’ management team returned to roster adjustments one day later.
After putting rookie quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson on the injured reserve less than a week ago, Cleveland signed eight-year veteran quarterback Jeff Driskel from the practice squad of the Cardinals to bolster their quarterback room back to three players.
For the most part of the 2023 season, Driskel has been a member of Arizona’s practice squad. He has played for the Bengals, Lions, Broncos, and Texans in the past. Throughout his career, he has started 11 games, the most of which were with Cincinnati in 2018.
The last time Driskel started for Houston was in 2022, when he threw for 108 yards and one touchdown. When Josh Dobbs was acquired by the Cardinals from the Browns in the final week of the preseason, he was eliminated from consideration to start while Kyler Murray healed from his torn ACL.
Now, Driskel travels to Cleveland to join a quarterback group that is led by former XFL player P.J. Walker and Comeback Player of the Year candidate Joe Flacco. There’s a chance he may play almost soon in Week 18, as the Browns secured a postseason berth on Thursday and guaranteed at least the top wild card slot in the AFC, regardless of what happens the rest of the way.
The Browns would be eliminated from contention for the AFC North title and the conference’s top seed if Baltimore defeats the Dolphins this coming weekend. Should that be the situation they find themselves in before their regular season finale, Driskel might be Walker’s primary backup in the event head coach Kevin Stefanski decides to rest several important players, including Flacco.
