The Packers have punished cornerback Jaire Alexander for his decision to disrupt the coin toss last Sunday in Charlotte. They’ll have to make another difficult decision concerning Alexander soon.
Alexander has a $8 million roster bonus due in March, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Contracts with such provisions are not uncommon. It forces a team to make an early decision on whether to bring the player back or release him. The earlier a player is released, the more probable he will receive maximum recompense elsewhere.
Here are the entire terms of Alexander’s four-year, $84 million contract deal, which he signed with the Packers in May 2022. Although Schefter claims that eliminating Alexander will result in $3 million in dead money for 2024, the Packers will have to absorb more than $27.4 million sooner or later.
If Alexander is released after June 1, the Packers will have $8.364 million in cap space in 2024, with the remaining $19.092 going toward the 2025 cap.
Alexander, a Pro Bowler in 2022, competed in 16 regular-season games. Injuries have limited him to only six games this year.
