Veteran players without a definite berth are constantly seeking the best possible situation to grab somewhere in the offseason. These players will have to demonstrate their worth during spring training.
For veterans who’ve had earlier success, there are occasions when young teams, especially those that won’t be contending for anything, will take a chance on them as a way to have them be positive influences in the clubhouse for younger talents. This looks to be the case for Jake Lamb, the 2017 All-Star.
The former Los Angeles Dodgers infielder has agreed to terms with the Pittsburgh Pirates on a minor league contract. Given the club’s modest expectations, there’s a good possibility Lamb will make the Opening Day roster. Lamb has spent his entire career with the Arizona Diamondbacks. He had at least 29 home runs and 91 RBIs in back-to-back seasons (2016–17). He hasn’t come close to those levels since. Lamb moved around many clubs after leaving Arizona, including Oakland, Chicago, and Toronto, before temporarily joining the Dodgers. He had a solid spring training in 2022, which helped him make the team.
