A quarterback duel between Sam Hartman and DJ Uiagalelei could have taken place in the Sun Bowl. Instead, two quarterbacks making their first starts of the season will be on display when No. 16 Notre Dame takes on No. 19 Oregon State in El Paso, Texas on Friday. Hartman of Notre Dame withdrew out of the competition to prepare for the NFL draft, while Uiagalelei of Oregon State entered the transfer portal. In addition, Beavers backup quarterback Aidan Chiles entered the portal and chose Michigan State, which had just hired Jonathan Smith away from Oregon State as head coach. So, in the Sun Bowl, the Beavers (8-4) and Fighting Irish (9-3) will be led by Ben Gulbranson (one pass attempt this season) for Oregon State and Steve Angeli (25 attempts) for Notre Dame. Gulbranson went 7-1 as a starter in 2022 before getting buried on the bench this season, which is good news for the Beavers. He was the MVP of the Las Vegas Bowl, in which Oregon State defeated Florida 30-3 to close the season. “It’s kind of helped me become a more well-rounded person,” Gulbranson said of his experience. “You understand football is a gift.” It’s a golden opportunity. It’s an honor to be able to play this game. I think it’s quite cool to be able to take a step back and observe everything like this. “I treasure every snap I get, whether it’s in practice or in a bowl game.” Angeli tossed four touchdown passes in limited action this season and now has the opportunity to compete for the starting job at Notre Dame in 2024. “Obviously, I’m now the starter, but my preparation — the way I’m preparing for the game — doesn’t change,” Angeli went on to say. “It’s now time for the real bullets to fly.” We have a lot of work to do to get to ten wins (by winning the Sun Bowl). And that is my only responsibility, my sole attention.” Running back Audric Estime (1,341 yards, 18 touchdowns rushing) and All-American left lineman Joe Alt are among the other Notre Dame standouts who have opted out of the game. Oregon State’s opt-outs include outstanding linebacker Easton Mascarenas-Arnold (107 tackles, tied for team lead) and receiver Anthony Gould (718 yards, tied for team lead). Despite having his ban for a DUI arrest removed by the school, Beavers standout running back Damien Martinez is not anticipated to participate. During the regular season, Martinez carried for 1,185 yards and nine touchdowns. Oregon State is making changes on more than just the player front. Trent Bray was appointed to head coach after Smith accepted the Michigan State job. Bray, on the other hand, has chosen to focus on staffing and recruiting and is not involved in the Sun Bowl coaching process. […]
