For this reason, in the last month of the regular season, the Miami Dolphins decided to activate veteran Melvin Ingram again. As the Dolphins get ready to play the Buffalo Bills, they have a critical need at outside linebacker and in the pass-rushing department, and they must hope that Ingram can fill it.
In their humiliating defeat to the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday, the Dolphins lost another outstanding edge pass rusher, Bradley Chubb, following the loss of one on Black Friday (Jaelan Phillips).
enrolled in the practice group on Dec. 14: Since being called up, Ingram has appeared in the last two Dolphins games and has largely remained quiet in his backup role. When they play the Buffalo Bills and Josh Allen on Sunday night in the game that will determine the AFC East champion, they’ll require even more.
INGRAM WAS A KEY FACTOR IN THE 2022 WIN
With only two victories in 11 encounters since Allen’s NFL debut in 2018, it’s no secret that the Dolphins and the QB from the Bills have had a difficult relationship.
At Hard Rock Stadium in September 2022, one of those victories occurred, and Ingram was a key contributor.
After signing in the offseason, Ingram played in just three games with the Dolphins. He recovered an Allen fumble that was caused by a hit from Jevon Holland during a blitz, had two sacks, and was involved in the tackle of wide receiver Isaiah McKenzie on the game’s final play, which allowed the clock to run out with the ball at the Miami 41-yard line and secure the 21-19 victory.
Ingram’s performance helped him win the September AFC Defensive Player of the Month award.
Ingram has previously targeted Allen before the 2022 match. When Allen made his first career start in 2018 as a member of the Los Angeles Chargers, he also allowed 1.5 sacks.
CAN INGRAM MELVIN FIND HIS GROOVE?
Although Ingram, 34, is obviously not the same player he once was, the Dolphins obviously think the former first-round selection can still be productive; if he weren’t, they wouldn’t have signed him in the first place, thereby replacing another veteran, Jason Pierre-Paul, who they waived after he played in only two games.
Given that he did not play the full season, it was assumed that Ingram would need some time to settle in. This could account for part of his lackluster performance in his first two games, which included just two tackles on rushing plays out of 37 snaps.
The time would be perfect for the old Ingram to reappear.
This will be more about the quality of snaps than the quantity, since he will probably play in a rotation at outside linebacker alongside Ogbah and Cameron Goode. Andrew Van Ginkel is expected to play as many snaps as he can manage on one side.
And Ingram performing as well as he did in that game in September 2022 would be very helpful to the Dolphins.
