As the baseball world waits for some of the biggest stars in free agency to find homes for the 2024 season, new speculations are circulating in the new year to at least keep the MLB hot stove heated. Jordan Montgomery and the Philadelphia Phillies are involved in the most recent.
Specifically, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports that Montgomery is still an option for the Phillies to acquire.
Naturally, the Phillies are vying for Montgomery’s services with about six other teams. There is a lot of conjecture that Montgomery is returning to the Texas Rangers, the defending World Series winners and his former employer.
Heyman points out that the Rangers will probably get back in touch with Montgomery in an attempt to get him back for another chance to play in Arlington as a settlement to the team’s TV rights approaches.
Other than 2023 AL Cy Young Award winner Gerrit Cole, the New York Yankees are rumored to be smitten with their former prospect as they want to bolster a rotation that is full of uncertainties.
However, there are other valuable left-handed starting pitchers available as free agents besides Montgomery. Blake Snell, the 2023 NL Cy Young Award winner, is currently without a contract, and Philadelphia is rumored to be interested in Snell.
The Phillies appear ready to throw everything on this core group of players after failing to make the playoffs the past two seasons. The Phillies would have MLB’s deepest rotation if they added a starter like Montgomery or Snell to a group that already includes Zack Wheeler and Aaron Nola, who was signed to a long-term contract this winter.
As spring training quickly approaches and these free agents narrow down their options, the upcoming weeks should be exciting.
