FALCON UPDATE: NFL and Falcon pro reporter reveal Falcons are in advance contract negotiation with head coach and de facto general manager in bid to replace Arthur Smith as firing stance revealed

If Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots decide to part ways, numerous clubs will be interested in him, and at least two of those teams could be in the same division.

According to CBS Sports’ Josina Anderson, more than one team in the NFC South is interested in Belichick.

The Carolina Panthers are the most obvious prospective NFC South suitor for Belichick, given they are the only team in the division with a head coaching opening. Todd Bowles is almost probably safe, as his Tampa Bay Buccaneers are on the verge of making the playoffs after losing Tom Brady last offseason. The New Orleans Saints appear content with head coach Dennis Allen as well.

The Atlanta Falcons, who appear to be leaning toward firing Arthur Smith, are the second team Anderson could be referring to.

A lot would have to be worked out before Belichick could join another team. The 71-year-old is under contract with the Patriots until at least 2024, so he is unlikely to be fired. If both parties want a fresh start, New England will most likely try to trade Belichick. This could constrain the market.

We know of one team that has been consistently linked to Belichick, but it is a safe bet that if Belichick becomes available, there will be competition.
