NEW DELHI: The Atlanta Braves have signed recently acquired left-hander Chris Sale to a two-year deal extension worth $38 million. This agreement restructures Sale’s existing contract with the Boston Red Sox, which was slated to expire at the end of the current season.
According to the terms of the agreement, the 34-year-old Sale will earn $16 million in 2024 and $22 million in 2025.
The agreement also contains a $18 million buyout-free club option for the 2026 season.
The Braves acquired the seven-time All-Star in a recent trade with the Boston Red Sox in exchange for promising infield prospect Vaughn Grissom and monetary considerations.
Sale, who waived his no-trade clause in order to move to the National League, has struggled with injuries in previous years. Despite his injury history, the left-hander remains a powerful pitcher, having made 20 starts the previous season and 31 starts over the previous three seasons.
Due to Tommy John surgery, Sale did not pitch in 2020, and he suffered a stress fracture in his scapula during the 2023 season, finishing with a 6-5 record and a 4.30 ERA in 20 starts.
