AUBURN, Alabama After just one season together, Philip Montgomery, the offensive coordinator for Auburn, was fired by coach Hugh Freeze.
After the Tigers finished 6-7 and had offensive struggles, particularly in the passing game with former Michigan State quarterback Payton Thorne, Freeze announced the announcement on Friday.
In a statement, Freeze said, “I informed Philip today that he would not be retained as our offensive coordinator.” “Philip is a decent man and coach.” These kinds of decisions are seldom simple. But I’ve concluded that going forward, this is best for our program. I’m grateful for all of his hard work over the previous year and send him my best wishes.
The Tigers’ passing average of just 162.2 yards per game placed them 121st out of 130 FBS offenses. In each game, the Tigers averaged 351 yards and 26 points. On December 30, Auburn lost 31–13 to Maryland in the Music City Bowl despite only gaining 300 yards overall.
Montgomery served as Tulsa’s head coach for eight seasons before joining Freeze’s inaugural Auburn staff in December 2022. He had previously served as an assistant coach at Houston and Baylor, where he was the offensive coordinator for four seasons.
