There were numerous debates concerning Auburn’s offensive play-calling in 2023.
Former offensive coordinator Philip Montgomery appeared to struggle to put together a consistent game plan without the assistance of head coach Hugh Freeze, who continued to specify when he was involved with the offensive gameplan on a weekly basis. When Freeze was in charge of the Tigers’ offense, it looked noticeably superior.
It appeared tough when he did not.
Now that Montgomery has been fired, Freeze is expected to take over as Auburn’s play-caller. According to Matt Zenitz of 247Sports, a formal decision has yet to be made, but Hugh Freeze is expected to take over as Auburn’s offensive coordinator.
Zenitz also mentioned in a tweet that Tigers analyst Kent Austin will be elevated to QB coach, according to Zenitz’ sources. At Liberty, Austin served as co-OC and QB coach alongside Freeze. Austin has also served as the head coach at Cornell and as the offensive coordinator at Ole Miss.
With Austin moved to QB coach rather than offensive coordinator, it appears like Auburn’s major aim for the new OC will be Ole Miss wide receivers coach Derrick Nix.
“I informed Philip today that he would not be retained as our offensive coordinator,” coach Hugh Freeze announced Friday afternoon in a statement. “Philip is a good man and a good coach.” Decisions like this are never easy, but I believe it is best for our program’s future. I appreciate his work over the previous year and wish him the best.”
