The Michigan football team has had three fantastic seasons in a row, as the Wolverines have beaten Ohio State, won the Big Ten, and qualified for the College Football Playoff for the third year in a row. Michigan has gone one step further this year, winning their CFP semifinal for the first time, and will face Washington football in the national championship game on Monday night. Things are looking well for the Wolverines right now, but there is some concern in Ann Arbor over head coach Jim Harbaugh.
Since Jim Harbaugh took over as head coach of the Michigan football team, there have been speculations that he would return to the NFL. Harbaugh was on the verge of departing for the Minnesota Vikings after the 2021 season, but he ended up staying in Ann Arbor.
With all that has happened with Harbaugh and Michigan this season, many people believe he is tired of college football. This season, Harbaugh was suspended for six games due to recruiting violations and the ongoing sign-stealing scandal. These are issues he would not have to deal with in the NFL. Everyone is wondering if he will depart, and he was questioned about his predicament once more on Saturday.
“Yeah, there’s a calendar — I’ll gladly talk about the future next week,” Harbaugh stated, according to a Blue By Ninety piece. “How about that, I’d like to have one?” “I hope to have a future.”
Many people believe that if Harbaugh leaves, current offensive coordinator Sherrone Moore will be the next Michigan football coach. After all, Moore took over as head coach several times this season while Harbaugh was suspended, and he guided the Wolverines to victories over #10 Penn State and #2 Ohio State. Harbaugh appears to believe that he would be an excellent head coach.
“(Sherrone Moore is) tremendous,” Harbaugh said. “Didn’t we already see it? You’ve already caught a peek of the bright star he is. He’s incredible, extremely smart, and works so hard. Understands what it’s like to be a player. Was a participant. And incredibly composed. Three, two, one, let it go if something goes wrong. He’s fantastic at it. He was never greater than in that two-minute drive in the Rose Bowl in overtime. He knew he had to call the game, his life’s drive, and he did. I witnessed the same thing while coaching against Ohio State at the Big House. He experienced the same situation when he attended Penn State. What do you think? You have to go to Penn State, and you find out the day before the game that, in addition to your offensive line coaching duties, offensive coordinating play duties, and play-calling duties, you will also make head coach decisions. So, without a doubt, Sherrone Moore is a blazing light. It makes no difference what anyone says. It’s your job. What you do is so loud that I can’t hear what you’re saying.”
If Harbaugh does leave, it appears that we know who will earn his vote for the head coaching position.
It will be some time before we learn what Jim Harbaugh’s future holds. Michigan is currently focused solely on winning a national championship. The Wolverines and Huskies will face off on Monday night at 7:30 p.m. ET at NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas. The game will be broadcast on ESPN, and Michigan is currently favored by 4.5 points.
