Deshaun Watson addressed his detractors head-on with a sharp message ahead of the season’s last week, clarifying his connection with the Cleveland Browns.Watson has been recovering from shoulder surgery that ended the season. He has been away from the club for a while, recovering in Los Angeles. Watson and the team have continued to communicate often, though.
“They appear nice. I speak with Andrew Berry and Kevin Stefanski on a weekly basis, Watson stated on his podcast QB Unplugged with Quincy Avery. “Every week, Jimmy Haslam and I speak.”
After Sunday, the Browns will have started five different quarterbacks this year. This season, Joe Flacco, PJ Walker, rookie Dorian Thompson-Robinson, and Watson have all started games. Starting against the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday will be recently signed veteran Jeff Driskel.
With the Browns, Flacco has flourished, going 4-1 and tossing for more than 300 yards in four straight contests. With Flacco leading the offense in touchdowns, Watson has drawn criticism from some quarters. He is nevertheless delighted about the Browns’ accomplishments.
“I’m going to the Bowl; they win and go there. “They receive a ring, and I will receive a ring,” declared Watson, who is signed to a $230 million contract with full guarantees. “I’m not falling for any of that. I can’t do anything because I’m hurt. All people want is something to talk about and say. For them, it’s all personal. I find this s**t to be entertaining.
Watson is just one of the Browns’ numerous significant injuries from this season. With 14 players on injured reserve at the moment, Cleveland’s cap space is now at an NFL-high 26.63%. Watson commended the Browns for their tenacity this season and for shifting the perception of the team.
It seems to be a cultural issue. It merely demonstrates that this is the Cleveland Browns, stated Watson. In the past, one may have assumed Cleveland had some talent by simply looking at them. It’s the same old thing, but they should do this. I believe that twelve of the nearly eighteen players on injured reserve are starters. Many other guys have injuries. This is the essence of Cleveland. We also established a mood. The guys who didn’t think they would play are now participating. That is why I traveled to Cleveland.
As the Browns’ starting quarterback this season, Watson was 5-1. 1,115 yards, seven touchdowns, and four interceptions were his final-year totals.
Regarding Watson’s future with the Browns, some intriguing issues have been raised by Flacco’s career comeback in Cleveland. In five starts, Flacco has passed for 1,616 yards, 13 touchdowns, and 8 interceptions. With Flacco in charge, the Browns have a 4-1 record.
Nevertheless, Flacco will turn 39 in January, and the Browns have committed to Watson’s salary for the foreseeable future. According to Browns insider Mary Kay Cabot, Watson should be prepared for training camp, which will start as soon as he returns to health.
When he recovers from his damaged shoulder, Watson is currently their starter, according to Cabot’s report from December 31. “He still has three years left after they gave him a guaranteed $46 million a year for five years.” They still think he’s the quarterback they gave up a net of five and three first-round picks for. It will be difficult to let Flacco leave, though, if the Browns win their first-ever Super Bowl.
Depending on how the postseason plays out, Flacco might decide to look for a chance to start games. Flacco has demonstrated that he still has it and is deserving of playing time.
