With the end of the 2023 season nearing, the Chicago Bears’ offseason in 2024 will be critical.
Not only will the Bears have to determine who to take with the No. 1 overall choice, but they will also have to decide what to do with quarterback Justin Fields and head coach Matt Eberflus.
The decision on Fields may take a little longer as the team awaits offers for the No. 1 overall pick, but CBS Sports’ NFL analyst Jonathan Jones stated on Sunday that the Bears are “trending toward keeping Matt Eberflus another year.”
It’s unclear whether maintaining Eberflus would imply a return for Fields, although it would be a surprise given how the Bears have looked under Eberflus.
This offseason could see a slew of good head coaching candidates, ranging from Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson to Michigan University head coach Jim Harbaugh.
So, if the Bears decide to trade Fields and pick a new quarterback, they may also want to bring in a new head coach for a fresh start.
If Chicago decides to maintain Eberflus, another possibility is to hire a new offensive staff, either for Fields or another quarterback.
Current offensive coordinator Luke Getsy has coached better this year, as seen by Fields’ improved stats, but the squad hasn’t made as much progress as some would want.
In any case, it appears that the instances involving Eberflus and Fields are unrelated, which creates an unusual situation in Chicago.
