Against the Buffalo Bills, the Pittsburgh Steelers will be missing their greatest player.
T.J. Watt will not play in Sunday’s Super Wild Card game against the Bills, according to Mike Tomlin. Watt was hurt in the team’s regular-season finale against the Baltimore Ravens.
Here’s what Mike Tomlin had to say about the Steelers being without Watt against the Bills, via ESPN.
“Obviously playing without T.J. is significant, but to be quite honest with you, we’ve played without a lot of people this year,” Tomlin said in a press conference. “It’s just another chance for us to strike a blow for team and demonstrate what team truly means: a group of people who work together to achieve a goal.” In terms of replacing T.J., it will not be a one-man task… It will be a committee approach, just as I stood before you and said similar things when Cameron Heyward missed a stretch of games.
“We need to improve our output in other areas because T.J. is unique, but that’s ball.” There is some attrition involved. That is what distinguishes it as the ultimate team sport.”
Watt has 19 sacks, four forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries, and 36 quarterback hits in 17 games this season for the Steelers. Pittsburgh’s by committee style may find some success on Sunday afternoon at Highmark Stadium, but it’s difficult to imagine them making the kind of effect Watt would have on the game.
