JUST IN: Will the Yankees trade with Marlins for this cost-effective LHP?

Every member of the New York Yankees organization, from ownership on down, is adamant about making sure they don’t miss the playoffs in 2024 or later at all costs.

According to a recent report by Jon Heyman of the New York Post, the Yankees are still actively seeking a strong starting pitcher. Peter Brody of SB Nation’s Pinstripe Alley provided justification for the Yankees’ pursuit of Braxton Garrett by citing a specific aspect of Garrett’s game that would be highly beneficial in the Bronx.
With Garrett acquired, the Yankees can provide balance and put away more batters.

Brody’s evaluation of Garrett is accurate and would be very beneficial to the Yankees.

With the exception of Gerrit Cole, the AL Cy Young winner, the Yankees’ top returning starters from 2023, Carlos Rodon Jr., Nestor Cortes, and Clarke Schmidt, all preferred using a four-seam fastball at least 52% of the time. Schmidt, on the other hand, used his cutter, sinker, sweeper, and changeup in a balanced manner, using them at least 19% of the time.

The Yankees as a team struck out 1,439 times, good for No. 12 in the MLB. With Cole not included, Cortes’ strikeout percentage came in at the 64th percentile, Rodon Jr.’s at the 41st, and Schmidt’s at the 36th, all of which were at or marginally over average for Major League pitchers.

In addition to offering diversity, Garrett, 26, would also be reasonably priced; in his most recent one-year contract, which he signed prior to the 2023 season, he made $732,000.

Right now, Garrett would be the Yankees’ youngest and least expensive core rotational player. Brian Cashman, general manager of the Yankees, should give him a look since he would fulfill owner Hal Steinbrenner’s desire to avoid the $300 million salary cap market.

Brody stated, “Garrrett is one of the best pitchers in MLB at commanding the edges of the strike zone and getting calls for strikes because of the wicked movement on his pitches and his pinpoint control.” “He can start his three best pitches—the sinker, slider, and changeup—well off the plate with the tilt and sweep of his body, which makes the hitter give up on the pitch before it moves back to catch the black.”

It’s no secret that the Yankees need to find another elite pitcher to round out their rotation and give them the best chance to bounce back from past postseason setbacks and defeat other teams that are predicted to challenge for the World Series.
