The Falcons are looking for a new head coach, but it doesn’t matter who they hire until they find a quarterback.
Desmond Ridder and Taylor Heinicke’s play directly contributed to Arthur Smith’s dismissal; if they don’t get it right this time, it will be the cause of the next coach’s demise as well.
On the professional side of things, there aren’t many inspiring possibilities. Justin Fields is perhaps the only player worth getting who has the potential to become the next franchise quarterback.
The Falcons cannot afford to go with a band-aid in Russell Wilson, Kirk Cousins, or Baker Mayfield; they must go younger. Ideally, the team will discover the solution in the draft. In my opinion, three players at the top are worth trading up for: Drake Maye, Caleb Williams, and Jayden Daniels.
Maye, Williams, and Daniels are my top three picks in that order. However, moving up for any of them will require a significant deal, especially for the top prospect.
According to The Athletic’s most recent mock draft, the Falcons strike out a deal with the Bears to trade up to the first overall choice and choose Caleb Williams, the 2022 Heisman Trophy winner.
Moving up from the eighth overall pick with two first-round picks and two second-round picks is a pipe dream, but I do it every day of the week and twice on Sundays.
A handful of firsts and seconds for a franchise quarterback is little change, and it will be nowhere near what Chicago can get in a trade if they chose to sell the pick.
The Panthers will pay more for the first overall pick than they did last year. Carolina sent two firsts, two seconds, and D.J. Moore to Chicago. Any transaction this year will begin there.
Three first-round picks, a pair of second-round picks, and Kyle Pitts would be a more likely deal for the Falcons to move up to the Bears’ top place. Even yet, I’m still going through with it.
A Super Bowl without a quarterback is an irrelevance.
