With Nick Saban’s retirement, the Alabama Crimson Tide are currently in the midst of a somewhat unexpected coaching search. They appear to have swung and failed to land on their best shot.
Soon after the announcement, rumors circulated regarding the front-runners for Saban’s enormous void.
Dan Lanning of Oregon was the person at the top of the list.
Lanning has experience in the SEC; at Georgia, he most recently served as defensive coordinator. As head coach, he has guided the Ducks to 22 victories in his two seasons.
It was suggested that Lanning was already interviewing for the Tide vacancy when rumors of an overnight travel from Eugene to Tuscaloosa began to circulate late on Wednesday.
Insiders then refuted that rumor, claiming Lanning was at home with his family and enjoying the Jason Bourne film series!
In his most recent social media post, the UO coach all but confirmed his intention to stay at Oregon, even though it didn’t completely rule him out as a contender.
Dan Lanning shares a statement on Alabama rumors.
Early on Thursday, it was reported that Lanning had no plans to leave his position. Matt Zenitz of 24/7 Sports broke the startling revelation.
Lanning stated, “Everyone’s got goals and aspirations,” during a team meeting for 2024. How do you obtain those, exactly? Make the most of your current situation. Being an Oregon Duck has meaning.
With Lanning no longer in the picture, candidates like Mike Norvell, Dabo Swinney, and Kalen DeBoer will be given priority in the coaching hunt.
