At NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas, around 75,000 spectators watched the No. 1 Michigan Wolverines (15-0) take on the No. 2 Washington Huskies (14-1), in a game that saw the Wolverines win the National Championship 34–13 on January 8.
The explosive combination of quarterback J.J. McCarthy and running back Blake Corum led the Wolverines to victory. McCarthy completed ten passes for 140 yards without any interceptions or passing touchdowns. On the other hand, Corum went off against the Huskies, accumulating 124 rushing yards and two scores on only 21 carries.
Thanks to quarterback Michael Penix Jr.’s effective and explosive passing, which he honed in the Pac-12—or what’s left of the conference—the Huskies rode an intense wave of momentum. Their Sugar Bowl victory on January 1st over the Texas Longhorns demonstrated their powerful combination of skill and physicality. Indiana University transfer Penix Jr. finished second in the 2023 Heisman Trophy race, losing to LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels.
Following a defeat on one of the biggest stages in college football, Penix expressed his emotions. Penix stated, “It stinks.” “We came here with the intention of winning. They accomplished some wonderful things; we were a terrific team. We didn’t take advantage of many of the possibilities we had on the attacking end, which would have improved our team’s chances of winning. We are fine, though, so it’s all good.
After the victory over Washington, Corum stated in the post-game press conference, “Today was a complete team effort.” “Playmakers, who are in great abundance here, create plays when they are needed.” In the National Championship, the running back for the Michigan Wolverines was named offensive MVP.
Donovan Edwards, the running back for Michigan, had an incredible six carries for 102 rushing yards and two touchdowns, most of which came on the game’s first drive.
McCarthy, the quarterback for the Wolverines, discussed the significance of the game after it was won. “We made great progress,” McCarthy remarked. “You have to venture to those gloomy regions when things are not going well in order to achieve achievements like this. I sensed that we would be at our current location.
255 passing yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions were recorded by the Huskies quarterback in the College Football Playoff National Championship.
Rome Odunze, an All-American wide receiver, served as the Huskies’ primary offensive weapon in the National Championship game. Odunze surpassed the school record held for more than 20 years by Reggie Williams, who gained 1,454 yards in a single season. Throughout the game, Odunze led all receivers with five catches for 87 receiving yards.
Washington’s time in the PAC-12 will come to an end with this season as the Huskies will join Michigan in the Big Ten Conference in August.
“A magnificent victory; I am ecstatic and filled with pride,” Michigan Head Coach Jim Harbaugh exclaimed. We have a 15-0 lead. The last people standing are us. It’s an amazing sensation.
