NEWS FLASH: Michigan starting point guard suspended for six road games until further notice

Michigan’s strange season is still going strong. The university declared on Wednesday that Dug McDaniel, a sophomore point guard, will be sidelined for the team’s trip games “until further notice.” Coach Juwan Howard says he is available and active for Michigan’s home games during that time.

The Wolverines’ next matchup is against Maryland on Thursday.

In a statement, Howard stated, “We have very high standards within our program, culture, and university.” “Serving as mentors, we need to set the standards and pathways for our young men to succeed.”

McDaniel stated on social media that his suspension would include six away games.

“Dug will dress for home games; however, when we are away from Ann Arbor, he will work towards meeting several academic goals he has set and needs to meet,” Howard stated. “We take this seriously, even though I’m disappointed. This is a critical milestone in Dug’s development as a student-athlete.”

To put it mildly, the school’s penalty is unusual. A player who is suspended will nearly always miss competitions one after the other rather than having periods of time off.

For a program that has been bogged down in off-court drama throughout the season, the news is the most recent off-court story. According to sources who previously spoke with CBS Sports, Howard had a heated argument with Michigan strength and conditioning coach Jon Sanderson, which prompted a human resources review. After recovering from heart surgery, Howard missed the first six weeks of the season as coach, yet he received no punishment for the incident.

McDaniel, on the other hand, has been the mainstay of an underperforming UM team. The Wolverines play from 6 to 9. McDaniel averages 17.8 points, 5.1 assists, and 4.1 rebounds when serving as a starter. If his suspension goes as expected, he will be free to play again in all competitions following Michigan’s game against Northwestern on February 22.
