The defense of the Green Bay Packers was already under scrutiny due to Jaire Alexander’s ankle injury on Wednesday, and those doubts may now become more significant given their performance against the Dallas Cowboys.
The All-Pro cornerback hurt his ankle after stepping on a teammate’s foot during the Packers jog-through. His availability for Green Bay’s wild-card weekend matchup against the second-seeded Cowboys is now in doubt.
“So, it was kind of a freak deal yesterday,” Packers head coach Matt LaFleur said Thursday via ESPN. “You guys noticed that we mostly used a jog-through, and regrettably, [he] trod on someone’s foot and rolled his ankle. I am aware that he is making every effort to be available, but I would say that it is on a daily basis, so we decided that it would be better for him to skip practice today.
Alexander has been hurt three times this season; the first two times, he missed nine games in total due to injuries. Alexander damaged his shoulder on November 5 against the Los Angeles Rams after he and practice squad quarterback Alex McGough collided, resulting in a back injury.
Reporters for the Packers observed that although Alexander remained silent to the media, they saw no obvious problems with his ankle or boot.
In response to a question regarding how frequently a player gets hurt during a half-speed exercise, LaFleur acknowledged that this particular instance is unusual.
“Well, it has occurred,” he remarked. It was simply… it was a crazy deal, and it doesn’t happen very often. It’s not like he was; in fact, he was concentrating, engaged in, and doing all of our requests when he unintentionally trod on someone’s foot.”
