The Atlanta Falcons sacked head coach Arthur Smith after another dismal season that resulted in a missed postseason opportunity, and they are now looking far and wide for the next contender to patrol their sidelines. Smith had been the Falcons’ head coach since 2021, but three straight seven-win seasons marked his demise as Atlanta’s head coach, opening the door for various fresh applicants to interview for the position.
Atlanta revealed on Sunday that they were considering some of its NFC South opponents in their coaching search, including the Carolina Panthers. The organization revealed in a post on X, the site formerly known as Twitter, that Panthers defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero will be interviewed for the role.
For a variety of reasons, the news may come as a surprise to the fanbase. First, the Panthers weren’t exactly the model of defensive success last season (though a significant part of it may arguably be attributed to a lack of talent). Second, most fans’ biggest beef with Arthur Smith was his apparent unwillingness to transfer the ball to Atlanta’s offensive-skilled players.
Meanwhile, the Falcons’ defence was solid for most of the season.
Whatever path the Falcons take in the future, fans hope to break the pattern of mediocrity that has defined the franchise since its last postseason participation in the 2017-18 season. The Falcons are unlikely to rush into a choice that will shape the franchise for years to come.
