Arthur Blank is genuinely interested in getting Bill Belichick to Atlanta; this is no longer just a rumour. On Monday, the Falcons declared that they had conducted interviews with Belichick for the vacant head coaching post.
Additionally, “no deal is imminent” between the two parties, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, but talks are still ongoing and there is “mutual interest.”
It appears that fire exists wherever there is smoke. These aren’t just rumours anymore. Bill Belichick might truly be hired by the Falcons.
Arthur Blank would have made a paradoxical hire after witnessing the former Patriots head coach mount the biggest comeback in Super Bowl history in his one and only Super Bowl as the Falcons’ owner, rallying from a 25-point deficit.
It’s obvious that Blank is preparing to strike Moby Dick with his harpoon. According to Jay Glazer, Atlanta’s owner may not find a bigger fish than Bill Belichick, at least not in terms of brand value, when it comes to big game hunting this offseason.
The fan base’s response to the possibility of the GOAT visiting Atlanta has been bitter. That would seem a little strange coming from the creator of the greatest sporting dynasty in history, don’t you think?
It’s not, though. Bill Belichick seems to have grown stale in New England and hasn’t been successful in hiring or drafting coordinators in recent years. I think it would be better for the Falcons if they paired a younger quarterback with a younger coach.
Fortunately, Falcons supporters may finally be able to fulfill their dream of having Rich McKay fired from the team.
A source close to the organization says that “Belichick would take the job only if McKay is completely frozen out of football operations,” according to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk.
If Belichick could finally get the Falcons off of McKay, who will undoubtedly be against the idea of bringing Belichick to Atlanta, maybe the signing wouldn’t have been such a bad one.
“McKay probably won’t be inclined to support it (hiring Belichick),” Florio continued. According to the source, Belichick and McKay have previously disagreed over rule modifications because of McKay’s position as the Competition Committee chair.
I hope Arthur Blank learns from the interview that he cannot collaborate with his right-hand man as his top head coach objective. Whether Belichick is hired as the Falcons’ next head coach or not, Blank needs to acknowledge McKay’s possible influence in snubbing other highly qualified applicants.
