As Buffalo head coach Maurice Linguist is anticipated to join the Crimson Tide as a defensive coordinator, new Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer is about to add a second sitting head coach to his staff, a person with knowledge of the negotiations confirmed to The Athletic. The news was initially reported by ESPN.
Over the previous three years at Buffalo, Linguist amassed a 14-23 record, which was capped off by a 7-6 campaign and a 2022 Camellia Bowl victory. The action was taken immediately after DeBoer appointed Kane Wommack, the head coach of South Alabama, as Alabama’s defensive coordinator.
Linguist was born in Dallas and attended Baylor, so he has strong connections in the state for recruiting. He spent 2020 as the defensive backs coach of the Dallas Cowboys before serving as the cornerbacks coach at Texas A&M in 2018 and 2019. In addition, he played safety at Baylor and served as a coach at Mississippi State, Minnesota, Iowa State, and Iowa State.
Wommack, Linguist, and defensive line coach Freddie Roach are currently members of Alabama’s defensive staff.
What does Alabama stand to gain from hiring a linguist?
Although Linguist’s role isn’t officially announced, it’s expected that he will man the Alabama defensive backfield because defensive back coaching was a part of every post he held before taking the helm at Buffalo. Alabama, which has had multiple defensive backs enter the transfer portal since Nick Saban’s retirement, places a special emphasis on holding that position. Regional ties and NFL experience are two more advantages for Linguist, who also carries on DeBoer’s defensive staff trend. There are only two positions left on Alabama’s on-field coaching staff: coordinator of special teams and outside linebacker.
All things considered, it seems that DeBoer brought in every member of his Washington offensive staff, with the exception of Robert Gillespie, who remained as the running backs coach. DeBoer is going for young, seasoned coaches with Southern connections on the defensive end. Kennington Smith III, beat writer from Alabama
