The Falcons’ first choice for head coach should be Jim Harbaugh. He transformed Stanford into a double-digit winning program, led the 49ers to three straight NFC championships, narrowly lost to his brother John Harbaugh in the Super Bowl, and went on to win this year’s National Championship with Michigan. He has been successful at every level.
But Harbaugh has shown he can adjust to his teammates in ways that go beyond simply winning. In San Francisco, he triumphed alongside Alex Smith and Colin Kaepernick. They went on to win a national championship with three very different quarterbacks, including JJ McCarthy.
When selecting a head coach, the Falcons should target Harbaugh because of his background, accomplishments, and offensive heritage. They won’t be the only ones chasing him, though, and he might want to sign with a team where the quarterback position is more secure.
He might nevertheless view the Falcons’ quarterback shortage as a plus, a kind of blank canvas. Furthermore, not many owners would be prepared to pay Arthur Blank the kind of income he would. The owner of Atlanta is more than prepared to pay to win.
Jim Harbaugh will face fierce competition from the Falcons, notably from Michigan.
