According to MLB.com, the Philadelphia Phillies boast two right-handers ranked among the finest in the game. Andrew Painter and Mick Abel were included in the list of the Top 10 right-handed pitching prospects in the game, which was compiled by the website. Abel came in at number seven and Painter at number four. Painter’s ranking of No. 4 shows how good he is when healthy, even though it is unlikely that he will pitch this year due to his recuperation from Tommy John surgery.
Painter had the highest rating of all the prospects under consideration, with 2.2 walks per nine innings. According to a recent survey, MLB executives gave Painter top marks for pitchability, or his sense of the game. The Phillies had high hopes for Painter despite the setback. In the minor leagues, the 2021 first-round selection is 6-2 with a 1.48 ERA and 167 strikeouts in 109.2 innings. He has only done 25 walks. He will carry on with his injury rehabilitation in anticipation of competing for a rotation slot in 2025. In the first round of the 2020 MLB Draft, Abel—another highly-touted prospect in the Phillies organization—was chosen.
Abel’s curveball was ranked by MLB as one of the top 10 prospects. He advanced to Triple-A Lehigh Valley last fall and is about to play in Philadelphia, so it has served him well. He is 14–20 with a 4.09 ERA in his minor league career, striking out 11.1 batters every nine innings. Paul Skenes of Pittsburgh was ranked first, followed by Jackson Jobe of Detroit and Cade Horton of the Chicago Cubs. Following Painter was Rhett Lowder of Cincinnati at No. 6 and Jacob Misiorowski of Milwaukee at No. 5. Following Abel were Chase Dollander of Colorado, Dylan Lesko of San Diego, and Noble Meyer of Miami to complete the Top 10.
