Next season, Bill Belichick will lead the Atlanta Falcons as head coach, per an NFL report citing CBS insider Josina Anderson.
This would be a historic victory for Falcons owner Arthur Blank’s team, as Belichick established himself as the best coach of his time with a 266-121 record and six Super Bowl championships during his 25 years as the New England Patriots’ head coach.
Belichick, 71, left the Patriots earlier this month and has since visited twice with the Falcons. Blank is reportedly trying to finalize an agreement that, according to Anderson, can be “expected barring a snag in negotiations.”
Belichick and Blank reportedly met for the first time earlier this week on the billionaire’s $180 million yacht off the coast of Antigua. That went well enough to warrant a follow-up meeting, during which Belichick, Blank, and other team leaders—including Rich McKay, the team CEO, whom Anderson notes that Belichick has “rapport” with—are presumably outlining an organizational plan.
Anderson stated that Arthur Blank, the owner, “is very skilled at being convincing and selling the benefits of coming to Atlanta.”
As we have already reported, Belichick is likely to assemble a coaching team that is comprised of close friends and colleagues. Among the people who should be on his list are former NFL head coaches Matt Patricia and Joe Judge.
Regarding those “snags,” false national reports linked Belichick to the Dallas Cowboys, who are keeping Mike McCarthy on staff. It may be worth keeping an eye on Nick Sirianni’s situation in Philadelphia.
With 333 victories going into the 2024 season, Belichick is only 15 wins shy of Don Shula’s record of 347 victories as a head coach.
To Belichick, that is undoubtedly important. In Atlanta, what counts? a program’s transformation into a postseason squad.
