TRANSFER UPDATE: Another young and talented defensive back flips his commitment to Ohio State.

There have been several changes to the long-standing college football dynasty since Alabama head coach Nick Saban retired. Under the direction of new head coach Kalen DeBoer, the program has started to assemble its staff, but the transfer portal has probably had the largest influence. The most well-known person to enter the gateway was undoubtedly defensive back Caleb Downs, who has committed to Ohio State.

The three schools that appeared to get their names mixed in were Georgia, Texas, and Ohio State, but the true freshman star quickly rose to the top of the market, and for good reason. Travaris Robinson, the defensive backs coach for Alabama, was hired by the Bulldogs to serve as the team’s co-defensive coordinator alongside Glenn Schumann prior to Downs signing on. Many assumed Georgia would be the landing location after hearing the news, but that wasn’t the case.

Downs totaled 107 tackles as a true freshman for the Crimson Tide, including 3.5 tackles for loss and two interceptions. In addition, he won the Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Year honour and was named an All-American by numerous publications. This is a huge boost to the team, and Downs, like when he initially arrived at Alabama, will have an instant impact at his new school.
