On Monday, the Florida Gators officially recruited blue-chip defensive back Jameer Grimsley, making them the latest team to indirectly benefit from Nick Saban’s retirement.
Grimsley, a 6-foot-3, 185-pound athlete, participated in sports at Tampa Catholic and Bloomingdale High Schools. Based on the 247Sports composite, he was ranked as the nation’s No. 189 overall prospect in the 2024 class. He would have been a nice complement to Billy Napier’s early signing haul that was revealed last month.
That was not the case. Grimsley signed to play for Saban at Alabama after making a late visit to the Gators. In his bio, the Crimson Tide highlighted his quickness and athleticism. After Saban’s retirement, he enrolled at Alabama earlier this month and used the transfer site. On Sunday, he committed to the Gators, and on Monday morning, UF made the announcement of his signing.
Grimsley elevates UF’s class in the 247Sports composite team rankings to No. 13 nationally (including transfers). Despite being a transfer in theory, he still gives Napier’s make-or-break recruiting class in the ’24 cycle a boost.
His departure from Alabama is not the only one; Florida State has also played a significant role in the Crimson Tide’s exodus. Five blue-chip transfers from Alabama have joined FSU: defensive safety Earl Little, offensive lineman Terrence Ferguson, wide receiver Malik Benson, running back Roydell Williams, and linebacker Shawn Murphy.
