Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk claims that the Eagles “expressed interest” in Bill Belichick. The lengthy former head coach of the New England Patriots, though, showed no interest in Philadelphia.
As one league insider put it, Belichick is ‘done with big-market media,’ therefore he’s more likely to move to Atlanta than to Dallas or Philadelphia,” Florio said on Thursday, January 18. Regarding the Cowboys and Eagles, there is a notion in certain league circles that after both teams showed interest in Belichick, the franchises chose to remain with their present head coaches after Belichick declined their advances.
Eagles Are Probably Bringing Nick Sirianni Back
The head coaches of the Dallas Cowboys and the Philadelphia Eagles were both seen as being on the hot seat a few days ago. The Eagles seem to be leaning toward bringing Nick Sirianni back for a fourth season, while the Cowboys have now reaffirmed their commitment to Mike McCarthy as their head coach through 2024.
“As of right now, it appears that Sirianni will remain,” Florio posted on Sunday, January 21. If so, he will simply stay; the Eagles won’t make an announcement about it.
The Eagles’ Nick Sirianni’s Employment Situation Is Uncertain
Even if Belichick seems to be leaning toward taking over as head coach of the Atlanta Falcons, it’s reasonable to question whether the Eagles had always intended to bring Sirianni back. Would Philadelphia have fired Sirianni if Belichick had expressed interest in the Eagles position?
Even though Sirianni guided the team to a Super Bowl trip the previous year, Philadelphia had a disastrous season finale. The Eagles finished the season with six straight losses after opening the season with a 10-1 record. After losing 32-9 to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the postseason wild card round, their season eventually came to an end.
After the team’s playoff loss, there were instant concerns about Sirianni’s position due to the early playoff exit and Philadelphia’s difficulties towards the conclusion of the season.
On Tuesday, January 16, Sirianni stated, “I’m not thinking about that.” “I’m considering the guys.” Once more, there are many guys in that locker room—every single guy there—and they have all given this their wholehearted effort. I’m not concerned about myself.
Although Sirianni will probably return to the Eagles, it seems that the team would have thought about replacing him with Belichick, the six-time Super Bowl champion and general consensus best head coach of all time.
Belichick didn’t seem all that interested in Philadelphia, perhaps because he wouldn’t have had complete control over football operations. It appears that Falcons owner Arthur Blank is willing to offer Belichick a similar role if he were to coach Atlanta. Belichick held that authority in New England.
“The inquiry, should the transaction proceed, arises as to whether Belichick will possess the ‘checks and balances’ that Patriots owner Robert Kraft indicated had vanished with the team last week,” notes Florio. Will Belichick rule over football operations once more? Why wouldn’t Belichick accept that authority if Blank is prepared to give it to him?
It’s fun to speculate about what Belichick, who led Tom Brady and the Patriots to nine Super Bowls and seventeen division victories, may have accomplished with Philadelphia’s championship-caliber team.
