SAD NEWS: Louisville women’s basketball team loses for the first time in ACC play, falling 79-68 at North Carolina

On Sunday, the University of Louisville women’s basketball team suffered its first defeat in an ACC match of the season.

In the third quarter of their 79-68 loss to North Carolina on Sunday afternoon at Chapel Hill, North Carolina, the Cardinals, who had been the only club in the conference without a loss, were outscored by 11 points and only made 12 of their 23 free throw attempts.

In the third quarter, North Carolina (14-5, 6-1 ACC) beat U of L 24-13 and grabbed the lead. In the last minute and a half of the game, the Cardinals had numerous opportunities to win the game but missed six free throws.

After the defeat to Connecticut, the Cardinals (16-3, 5-1) had won six straight and were 5-0 in league play, with three of the five victories being away from home.

At 6-1, Syracuse and UNC are now leading the league, with U of L trailing at 5-1. While NC State is 4-2 and Florida State, Georgia Tech, and Duke have now suffered three conference losses, Notre Dame and Virginia Tech are 5-2.

With 16 points, three rebounds, three steals, and two assists, Nyla Harris led the Cardinals in the game. Olivia Cochran followed with 14 points, five rebounds, and four assists, and Jayda Curry finished with 14 points and two assists. From the free-throw line, Harris and Cochran both scored two of every six.

After leading 22–13 after the first quarter, the Cardinals rallied to tie the game with 14 of the first 17 points scored in the second quarter.

At the half, the score was knotted at 36.

In the third quarter, North Carolina made 10 of 14 free throws, while the Cardinals made 5 of 10 field goals but missed their final 4 attempts. When the last period began, the Tar Heels had a 60-49 lead. Despite repeated attempts by U of L to cut it to five points, they were unable to secure a victory.

Louisville’s current home stand consists of three games, starting at 7 p.m. on Thursday against Boston College.
